Can you believe both Science and God? Yes, I believe so; I've met scientist who are Christians! There was a funny line in the movie "Nacho Libre" where a character (Jack Black's character's boxing partner-Esqueleto) kept repeating, "I don't believe in God, but I believe in Science". Torwards the end of the movie, Esqueleto decides to believe in God in a "dier" situation (big batch between Nacho Libre and the heavy weight champion). Esqueleto and Nacho Libre would pray together before the match on the boxing ring-cool, huh!

Science Fictions: Aliens

ALIENS

Did you know that Aliens are mentioned in the Bible?

"We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope."-1 Chronicles 29:15

"aliens"

Well, to be exact, aliens were referred to "refugees", "immigrants", or "foreigners" in a new land.

Yesterday (Thursday, April 21st of 2005), I attended a workshop titled "Understanding Culture & Understanding People". The speaker shared indirectly how we need to value our cultural diversity as humans living together as global community because we just have only one "good planet" to live on. He shared this after visiting the Kennedy Spacer Center in Florida. I almost had the chance to visit this place when I went with my Aunt and sister in 1991 to Orlando, FL.

Anyways, I thought about some hollywood films how "nations" work together (putting our political issues of conflict asside) to fight "aliens"...

"Independence Day"

Or working together to get through "global natural disasters"...

"Day After Tomorrow"

...which recently became true with the Asian Tsunami that hit towards the end of 2004. We do really need to learn how to get along, which I believe "nations" will come together when our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ comes back again...will you be ready?

  • "Jesus the Bread of Life"

25When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?" 26Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval." 28Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" 29Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." 30So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'[3] " 32Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." 34"Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread." 35Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 36But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." 41At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." 42They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?" 43"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. 44"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.'[4] Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. 50But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." 52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever." 59He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum."-John 6 If you do believe in those extra-terristrials, sorry to dissapoint you-here are some interesting information that you might be interested in:

    Hello,

"...Also the Evangelical Free church (with IVCF) is bringing a leading proponent of Intelligent Design. This movement is attempting to look at the scientific evidence that point towards a designer. Alternatives to evolution are not discussed much, and when they are it is quite controversial (this sentence is my opinion). This should be a very interesting. I heard this subject has gained some national news coverage with schools and discussing whether or not to teach it in the classrooms. So there should be a lot of interest.

Dr. Paul Nelson is the speaker. He has contact with Professor Paul Myers here at UMM (he has a website at http://sci2135d1-pm.morris.umn.edu/).

I have found more information about Dr. Nelson at http://www.iscid.org/paul-nelson.php. I believe that Dr. Nelson will be speaking in some of the classrooms this next week (I haven't confirmed this yet).

Please invite your members to this presentation. It will be this coming...

Wednesday, April 6th 2005, in the Science Auditorium starting at 7:15 pm.

I think there will be a time for question and answer afterwards. His talk is entitled:

"Why is the Problem of Macroevolution Still Unsolved? Evolution Meets Intelligent Design"

    Talk Description:
"How did different types of animals evolve? Nearly 150 years after Darwin's /Origin of Species/, this question still challenges evolutionary biologists. In this lecture, Paul Nelson explains how recent discoveries in developmental biology throw light on the problem of macroevolution and why that problem will likely continue to be unsolved within the Darwinian framework."

Coming to Morris Armory on Saturday Brian Young, sponsored by Zion Lutheran Church, is speaking at the armory this coming Saturday from 10am to 2pm on "Intelligent Design" with a few different goals in mind.
    A. To help Christians "build bridges" with those who don't understand creation.
    B. To explain a 6 day creation so that you can give an explanation to others.
    C. To encourage Christians in their understanding of Creation and the Word of God.

The Speaker's name is Brian Young, he is a former high school Science Teacher with an indepth background on the subject. This should prove to be an interesting and fruitful presentation. The cost is $10 per adult (lunch is included with that) and $5 for students (college, HS, Jr High and Elementary age). This presentation would be very worthwhile and informative. The sponsors weren't prepared for the rigors of publicity etc. so the word hasn't gotten out! Pre-registration goes from 9 to 10am.

I just read Genesis 5 in the Old Testament of the Bible, and my eyes were opened "again" with the years (estimate 7,125!) between Adam (Creation) and Noah (Great Flood)! I remember reading articles that estimate 6,000-8,000/present, which I never realized it was a larger number...

    Commentary by ROBERT JAMIESON
    CHAPTER 5
Gen 5:1-32 . GENEALOGY OF THE PATRIARCHS.
    1. book of the generations--(See Gen 11:4 ). Adam--used here either as the name of the first man, or of the human race generally.
    5. all the days . . . Adam lived--The most striking feature in this catalogue is the longevity of Adam and his immediate descendants. Ten are enumerated ( Gen 5:5-32 ) in direct succession whose lives far exceed the ordinary limits with which we are familiar--the shortest being three hundred sixty-five, [ Gen 5:23 ] and the longest nine hundred sixty-nine years [ Gen 5:27 ]. It is useless to inquire whether and what secondary causes may have contributed to this protracted longevity--vigorous constitutions, the nature of their diet, the temperature and salubrity of the climate; or, finally--as this list comprises only the true worshippers of God--whether their great age might be owing to the better government of their passions and the quiet, even tenor of their lives. Since we cannot obtain satisfactory evidence on these points, it is wise to resolve the fact into the sovereign will of God. We can, however, trace some of the important uses to which, in the early economy of Providence, it was subservient. It was the chief means of reserving a knowledge of God, of the great truths of religion, as well as the influence of genuine piety. So that, as their knowledge was obtained by tradition, they would be in a condition to preserve it in the greatest purity.

Bicentennial celebrations have portrayed Darwin as a kindly old gentleman pottering around an English house and garden. What that misses is the way his ideas were abused in the 20th century and the way in which Darwin was wrong about certain key issues. He asserted that different races of mankind had traveled different distances along the evolutionary path - white Caucasians were at the top of the racial hierarchy, while black and brown people ranked below. [Racism] was a widespread prejudice in British society at the time, but he presented racial hierarchy as a matter of science. He also held that the poor were genetically second-rate - which inspired eugenics..

"I shun all things made up, my personal f-word is fiction, so imagine my delight when I found out Ben Stein, the clever-skirting-genius host of Win Ben Stein's Money that guy in that Ferris Bueller movie, and a former speech writer for Nixon and Ford has cooked up a new documentary.
It's called Expelled and looks at the teaching of science in schools. Either I'm wildly dimwitted, naive, brainwashed, or a scootch of all three, but I assumed the movie would be about how the education system is squashing scientific thought and empirical enterprise in America. And then I watched the trailer. Mouth, agape.
Whoa! Ben Stein, savant who sat in the final round of his game show crushing anyone who dared challenge his mental prowess, has made a movie about the strangle hold Darwinism has on other schools of thought. In the trailer he says this of the treatment of academics who don't strictly subscribe to the theory of evolution, "This tells me Darwinists are afraid. They're hiding something."
I'm going to be first in line when it comes out April 18. Ben Smartypants Stein, presenting a civil case advocating for free thought that might lead to intelligent design? This I gotta see. Check out the trailer and see what I mean.
Could he be right? Are evolutionists taking over and crowding out other ideas?"

    Scientific Proof of God

"Proof of God can be found in science. In this documentary you will find scientific proof God exists. This movie will fascinate you with the wonders of creation. Withs the advancement of science we now have now have enough quantifiable facts to prove that God exists. Watch, enjoy and explore :)
Many people assume that there is no proof of God because how can you prove the non-physical? Watch this video and you will find all the proof you need to make a rational decision. There is indeed proof.
Some say if there was proof of God we would have no free will - everyone would believe. However this is not true. People know without a shadow of a doubt that smoking cigarettes kills yet they still do it anyway. There can be proof of God in the world without it overwhelming mankind to the point that they can no longer choose not to believe. Examine the proof and decide for yourself. Enjoy the ride and keep searching :)"

E-mail Fwd from my friend Shannon F.
Did God create everything that exists?
Does evil exist? Did God create evil?

"A University professor at a well known institution of higher learning challenged his students with this question. "Did God create everything that exists?" A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"
"God created everything?" The professor asked.
"Yes sir, he certainly did," the student replied.
The professor answered, "If God created everything; then God created evil. And, since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."
The student became quiet and did not answer the professor's hypothetical definition. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth. Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question, professor?" "Of course", replied the professor. The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"
"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?" The other students snickered at the young man's question. The young man replied, "In fact, sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat and all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat." The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?" The professor responded, "Of course it does."
The student replied, "Once again ! ;you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."
Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"
Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.
To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold...a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light."
    The professor sat down.

  • New Noah's Ark ready to sail POSTED: 2:31 a.m. EDT, April 29, 2007 Story Highlights (CNN)

  • Dutch man uses biblical records to build model of huge boat
Wife wasn't in favor of project but drew up the plans anyway
Threat of rising seas from global warming could make location prophetic
"SCHAGEN, Netherlands (AP) -- The massive central door in the side of Noah's Ark was thrown open Saturday -- you could say it was the first time in 4,000 years -- drawing a crowd of curious pilgrims and townsfolk to behold the wonder.
Of course, it's only a replica of the biblical Ark, built by Dutch creationist Johan Huibers as a testament to his faith in the literal truth of the Bible.
Reckoning by the old biblical measurements, Johan's fully functional ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That's two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house. (Watch a tour of the replica Ark Video)
Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras, bison and other animals greet visitors as they arrive in the main hold.
"The design is by my wife, Bianca," Huibers said. "She didn't really want me to do this at all, but she said if you're going to anyway, it should look like this."
A contractor by trade, Huibers built the ark of cedar and pine -- biblical scholars debate exactly what the wood used by Noah would have been.
Huibers did the work mostly with his own hands, using modern tools and occasional help from his son Roy. Construction began in May 2005.
On the uncovered top deck -- not quite ready in time for the opening -- will come a petting zoo, with baby lambs and chickens, and goats. And one camel.
Visitors on the first day were stunned.
"It's past comprehension," said Mary Louise Starosciak, who happened to be bicycling by with her husband while on vacation when they saw the ark looming over the local landscape.
"I knew the story of Noah, but I had no idea the boat would have been so big."
In fact, Noah's Ark as described in the Bible was five times larger than Johan's Ark.
But that still leaves enough space near the keel for a 50-seat film theater, where kids can watch the segment of the Disney film "Fantasia" that tells the story of Noah.
Another exhibit shows water cascading down on a model of the ark. Exhibits on the third level show ancient tools and old-fashioned barrels, exotic stuffed animals, and a wax model of an exhausted Noah reclining on a bed in the forecastle.
Genesis says Noah kept seven pairs of most domesticated animals and one breeding pair of all other creatures, plus his wife, three sons and three daughters-in-law together on the boat for almost a year while the world was deluged.
Perhaps it was only logical that the replica project would be the brainchild of a Dutchman: Fear of flooding is ingrained in the country's collective consciousness by its water-drenched history.
Lois Poppema, visiting from California, said she thought the Netherlands was exactly the right place for an ark.
"Just a few weeks ago we saw Al Gore on television ... saying that all Holland will be flooded" by rising sea levels, she said.
"I don't think the man who made this ever expected that global warming will become (such an important) issue -- and suddenly having the ark would be meaningful in the middle of Holland."
Under sunny skies Saturday, Huibers said he wasn't worried about another biblical flood, since according to Genesis, the rainbow is the sign of God's promise never to flood the world again. But he does worry that recent events such as the flooding of New Orleans could be seen as a portent of the end of time.
Huibers said he hopes the project will renew interest in Christianity in the Netherlands, where churchgoing has fallen dramatically in the past 50 years. He also plans to visit major cities in Belgium and Germany.

    WEATHER

"And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. [Is] not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day."-Joshua 10:13

Below is a part of the chapter I was very intrigued on how God is in control of the weather. It's so awe inspring of how God can just move any any situations (e.g. war)

"I am sure most of you like me have at sometime prayed for a change in the weather. Last year on the day of St Chads Summer Fete it was pelting it down and at 10 minutes before it was due to start we all gathered under the protection of a marquee and prayed for the rain to stop. We also sung Shine Jesus shine although a bit tongue in cheek! Guess what, within minutes the rain stopped and it remained dry for the whole duration, the rain only resumed as we were packing up. Coincidence? I think not! Sometimes I really feel sorry for God, as he receives our prayer requests. It would be impossible to please everybody all the time wouldnt it. Can you imagine for example A Christian family off to a holiday in Norfolk praying for good dry weather so they could enjoy the beach, yet at the same time a Christian farmer praying for rain as his crops needed watering. I guess God is often in a no win situation!"

  • *I first heard about this awesome story during Thanksgiving
"Just outside the Georgia capitol building, Governor Sonny Perdue led his state in an official prayer for rain this week. As most people know by now, Georgia is suffering from a potentially catastrophic drought, and Perdue decided to seek divine intervention. Appealing to a higher power for rain is an age-old human tradition, one perhaps best illustrated in the form of the Native American rain dance. So, the Republican Governor led a gathering of lawmakers, ministers and ordinary citizens in a direct and specific request to God.
"Oh father, we acknowledge our wastefulness," Perdue said. "But we're doing better. And I thought it was time to acknowledge that to the creator, the provider of water and land, and to tell him that we will do better."
Nay sayers attacked the proceedings on several points:
"The governor is exceeding his constitutional authority," said Ed Buckner, an atheist and treasurer of the group [The Atlanta Freethought Society]. "He has no right to set up prayer services on behalf of the people of Georgia, particularly not on the grounds of the state Capitol."
At the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's blog, one reader took issue with the Governor's actions from a theological perspective:
"God is not an ATM machine you can go to and get whatever you need whenever you ask for it."
So did the prayer work? While there were trace amounts of rain the following day, the science-based forecast for the rest of the week puts the chance of further precipitation at 10% or less. As attorney Gil Rogers sees it, whether or not a few drops fall from the sky this week or the next is beside the point:
"We shouldn't look at it as 'Once the rains come we'll be fine,'" he said. "We'd like to see rain, but this doesn't get us any closer to sustaining water management in Georgia."
Lastly, the people over at the site Why Won't God Heal Amputees? have posted a video with their take on the efficacy on prayer. I'm guessing Sonny Perdue hasn't seen it.By David Knowles Nov 15th 2007 8:59AM

Teach them the right way to live, and send rain on the land you gave your people for an inheritance.

I've heard earthquake stories of Morris, which really suprised me. In fact, Morris is located an hour from the continental divide, which is the reason for our earthquake prone area. The most recent earthquake was back in June of 1993 and the last one before this was in 1973:

USGS: Earthquake Hazards Program: Largest Earthquake in Minnesota

    Earthquakes
" In the 141 years since 1860, Minnesota has recorded 18 earthquakes, more than half of them during the last 35 years. Most of Minnesota's earthquakes occur along a line that runs from the southwest to the northeast through Ortonville, Morris, Alexandria, Staples and Nisswa. This area is part of the Great Lakes Tectonic Zone, which, along with the Yellow Medicine Shear Zone, was formed more than 2 billion years ago. They are called zones instead of faults because the exact location is hard to pin down, but runs in about a 30-mile wide band situated on the basis of earthquakes that have occurred in the past."-Glaciers, Ecosystems, and Earthquakes-Yellow Pages

  • "Ground Breaking" Research Leads to Award for Morris Scientist July 15,2009 kmrskkok.com

  • " After a 40 year career in research spanning the agronomy spectrum from soil carbon sequestration to root resistance, Dr. Donald C. Reicosky has been given the Soil Science Society of America's Distinguished Service Award.
As a scientist at the North Central Soil Research and Conservation Laboratory, Reicosky has had a few 'aha moments'. One in particular has kept him on the world-wide soil conference circuit. While working with a colleague recording data on how fast plants die by releasing carbon dioxide, Reicosky said they tested bare soil where the ambient CO2 concentration was coming out higher than normal so they recalibrated the equipment and went back out and notices that a tractor was up wind tilling a field. After testing CO2 concentration on a recently tilled field they notices that levels were higher.
Reicosky and his colleagues found that the amount of carbon lost from soil within a few days after tillage was proportional to the volume of soil disturbed. So began the idea of carbon sequestration. He gives a lot credit to his co-workers for that discovery, pointing to the collaboration he's enjoyed at the soils lab. Reicosky is retired but he says he'll continue to sing for his supper as long as people want to hear his message about carbon, carbon cycling and environmental quality. Just off the heels of a speaking engagement in Russia he's been asked to speak in both Boulder Colorado and Argentina for August. And in November it's off to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where he's one of three scientists accept his award at the Agronomy Society of American meeting.
