I (Sal) have been fascinated with Astronomy since I can remember? I remember taking a class back in high school, where I was fascinated and eager of the homework that was given-to go outside and look at the stars.

What really happened on that day?

Here are five major points that clearly stand out in the passage.
1. Something miraculous took place that day that enabled them to have a wonderful victory.
2. That miracle came about because of Joshua’s prayer.
3. That miracle had something to do with the sun and moon, with which only God could affect.
4. That the victory had to do with an extended time to fight the enemy before they scattered back to their cities.
5. That God was fighting for Israel.
Any interpretation that leaves out these emphases is inconsistent to what is being taught. Those people that were there recognized something miraculous happened that day. It left a tremendous impression upon them. Unless we can accept this, then we can learn nothing from the Word of God.
The main point is that God not only gave them a great victory, but the victory came about in such a manner that made a great impression on the Israelites and the enemies about them. Remember verse 14, “And there was no day like that before it or after it, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.”
We must have faith to rightly approach this passage just like Genesis 1:1-6. We are not meant to be able to prove these things happen. We cannot recreate the creation event nor can we bring a star into our labs for testing. Just recently we gathered a little dust from a meteor and we are so excited. Man regularly throws away old theories for new ones. Those captured dust particles are no exception. We are light years away from understanding many galactic events and phenomena. We should not be so arrogant to think that we understand everything. We still cannot understand many things. It is not unreasonable that the Creator could do such a thing. It is unreasonable to think that man could do such a thing. It might be inconsistent with what we normally observe but the Maker of all thing certainly could have inserted subroutines within the laws of the universe... An astronaut who grew up in Minnesota is about to become one of only a half-dozen from the state who have gone to space.
Karen Nyberg is from the tiny town of Vining, which is located about 27 miles east of Fergus Falls. She graduated from Henning High School in 1988. She'll join a mission to the International Space Station on Saturday, conditions permitting.
All of Vining will be watching when the second of three flights brings components to the Japanese Kibo laboratory.
Nyberg's family plans to go to Cape Canaveral for the launch.
Nyberg became an astronaut in 2000. This will be her first trip to space.
And the crew members waiting on board the international space station must be wishing NASA could hurry it up a bit.
Just added to the supplies being carried up by Discovery is a special pump to fix what might be described as the space station's number-one problem -- a broken toilet. It's been acting up for the past week. The three male residents have had to temporarily bypass the problem, which involves urine collection.
Also being squeezed on board is a Disney action figure, Buzz Lightyear. It'll spend several months at the space station as part of an educational program for math and science teachers and their students."

The object's light is so intense, that it is difficult to make out its shape. The lights emanating from the craft dim and then brighten, from left to right, and then right to left. The object now begins to slowly move away from the men, in the direction of the city of Hampton.

There's a very good book entitled Incident at Exeter by John Fuller, the same author who wrote The Interrupted Journey about the Betty and Barney Hill case. He chronicles some amazing reports from citizens all around the area including some that continued while he was there researching the article for the "Saturday Review". It's great stuff, and he finds some interesting correlations between the locations of the sightings and the locations of high-tension power lines, and posits a suggestion that there may be some link between the UFO sightings in that area and the Great Northeast Blackout of 1965. It's definitely worth reading even for those of only casual interest in UFOs, and a great resource for those more serious about the subject.....

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not endorsing astrology here. I'm not granting these signs any power over our lives, choices, or futures. However, when I do a biblical study from Virgo to Leo, I discover some remarkable things. For instance, Virgo represents the foretold virgin (Isaiah 7:14) holding a branch (Jeremiah 23:5-6) and an ear of corn, which represents the promised seed of the woman (beginning with Eve at the Fall in Genesis 3:15).
And if I continue my word study through the Bible, I discover Leo, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Redeemer who is triumphant in the end!
Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed." (Revelation 5:5)
Some scholars see a clear presentation of the Christian gospel in the ancient zodiac. Others think the ancient meanings have been stretched a bit. Regardless, the Mazzaroth is a fascinating study...

"CAPE CANAVERAL, FLA (ANS) -- Proving that space flight is not the highest calling for a pilot, astronaut Patrick Forrester is taking a bit of missionary history onboard space shuttle “Discovery,” which is scheduled for liftoff from Kennedy Space Center in the early morning hours of Aug. 25.
The goal of the two-week orbital mission is to equip the International Space Station.
The item comes from martyred missionary pilot Nate Saint’s Piper PA-14, which is on display at the headquarters of MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) in Nampa, Idaho. Saint and four other missionaries were martyred on a sandbar in Ecuador on Jan. 8, 1956, by a tribe of Waodani Indians.
A news release from MAF reported that the incident sparked international news coverage and renewed interest in mission work. Several of the tribesmen that killed Saint and the others were later converted to Christianity by relatives of the slain missionaries.
“Bringing attention to and renewing interest in missions would be a great result of this experience,” said Forrester, who was born in El Paso, Texas, the year after the martyrdoms.
Speaking in a news release he added, “My deepest intent is to honor Nate Saint, the Saint family and all missionaries around the world.”
The piece is from the Piper’s battery box and has received approval for the flight from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) after conforming to strict size and weight restrictions.
MAF said that Forrester, who will be making his third shuttle flight, has logged more than 4,500 hours in more than 50 different aircraft and has been with NASA 16 years. In addition to his time at NASA, he spent over 26 years as an Army aviator. Yet his dream has been to assist with the high calling of missionary aviation.
“I’ve always had a heart for missions,” Forrester said in the news release. “When I visualize what I might do after I end my career at NASA, always in the back of my mind is going into the mission field in some way. If I could go tomorrow and be a pilot with an organization like MAF, I think that’s what I’d do.”
Whether you are an astronaut, a missionary or something else, Forrester has a simple approach to discovering what career journey you should take. “There are so many needs out there,” Forrester said in the release. “People need to figure out where their passion and their talents intersect with God’s plan for the world.”
Forrester heard about Saint and the other four missionary martyrs while attending a Steven Curtis Chapman concert. “He told the story of the missionaries who had gone down and had lost their lives,” Forrester recalled. “That story just fascinated me, and through that I heard of the book ‘Through the Gates of Splendor.’ That’s when I really first understood about MAF.”
Forrester asked MAF to provide a part of Saint’s plane for the shuttle mission. When the mission is completed, Forrester will return the piece to MAF, providing a certificate confirming its presence on the space flight. MAF said the organization plans to display the battery box part and certificate at its headquarters.
Forrester noted that Saint “could have never imagined that we would have the opportunity to take it to a space station.”
MAF said that as for himself, Forrester sees missions in his career flight plan. “We are all called to serve God in some manner,” Forrester said in the news release.
He added, “I have had the opportunity to participate in several short-term mission trips to Uganda, Canada, Puerto Rico and South Africa. Each time I have developed a heart for the people we served. "LOS ANGELES (AP) — A computer specialist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is going to court over allegations that he was wrongfully terminated because of his belief in intelligent design.
Opening statements in the lawsuit by David Coppedge were expected to start Tuesday morning in Los Angeles Superior Court after lawyers spent Monday arguing several pretrial motions.
Coppedge, who worked as a team lead on the Cassini mission exploring Saturn and its many moons, claims he was discriminated against because he engaged his co-workers in conversations about intelligent design and handed out DVDs on the idea while at work.
Intelligent design is the belief that a higher power must have had a hand in creation because life is too complex to have developed through evolution alone.
Coppedge lost his team lead title in 2009 and was let go last year after 15 years on the mission.
In an emailed statement, JPL dismissed Coppedge's claims. In court papers, lawyers for the California Institute of Technology, which manages JPL for NASA, said Coppedge received a written warning because his co-workers complained of harassment.
They also said Coppedge lost his team lead status because of ongoing conflicts with others.
Caltech lawyers contend Coppedge was one of two Cassini technicians and among 246 JPL employees let go last year due to planned budget cuts.
The case has generated interest among supporters of intelligent design. The Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian civil rights group, and the Discovery Institute, a proponent of intelligent design, are both supporting Coppedge's case.
The National Center for Science Education, which rejects intelligent design as thinly veiled creationism, is also watching the case and has posted all the legal filings on its website.
Coppedge's attorney, William Becker, contends his client was singled out by his bosses because they perceived his belief in intelligent design to be religious. Coppedge had a reputation around JPL as an evangelical Christian, and interactions with co-workers led some to label him as a Christian conservative, Becker said.
In the lawsuit, Coppedge says he believes other things also led to his demotion, including his support for a state ballot measure that sought to define marriage as limited to heterosexual couples and his request to rename the annual holiday party a Christmas party.
Coppedge is seeking attorney's fees and costs, damages for wrongful termination and a statement from the judge that his rights were violated, said Becker.

'Few things capture the public's curiosity like Area 51. The top-secret military base (which doesn't officially exist) has been the subject of conspiracy theories for decades. What actually went on there? Something tells us we'll never know for sure. However, a recently revealed series of photographs provides some tantalizing new clues.
The photos, which were published by National Geographic, show a titanium A-12 spy plane. In one image, the satisfyingly sci-fi-looking plane hangs upside down while it is prepared for radar testing. "While raised in a Christian home – and a believer and churchgoer since age 10, he was a nominal Christian at this stage of his life. “Maybe he walked away from his walk with the Lord a little,” Mary suggests. “He described himself as a ‘bump on a log Christian.’"
But he really needed wisdom due to this problem and he said, “God I need your help right now."
Suddenly Irwin experienced the presence of Jesus Christ in a remarkable way, unlike anything he ever felt on earth. “The Lord showed him the solution to the problem and the experiment erected before him like a little altar," Mary says.
"He was so overwhelmed at seeing and feeling God’s presence so close,” she says. “At one point he turned around and looked over his shoulder as if He was standing there."
This unusual encounter with Jesus – some 238,000 miles from earth, changed Irwin’s life forever.
After his return from the moon, Irwin rode in a ticker tape parade through the streets of New York. “There were thousands of people lining the street and he was trying to see all their faces,” Mary recalls. “God dropped it in his heart that he had a responsibility to mankind to share Jesus with everyone after that."
Like other men in church history who have experienced dramatic encounters with God, the result was an increased power to witness for Jesus Christ, a confidence and boldness that fueled his passion to become an emissary for Jesus Christ to the nations.
Within a year of Irwin’s return from space, he resigned from NASA and formed High Flight Foundation, which is on a quest to reach the world as “goodwill ambassadors for the Prince of Peace."
"God decided that He would send His Son Jesus Christ to the blue planet,” Irwin said, “and it’s through faith in Jesus Christ that we can relate to God. Jesus Himself said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes unto the Father except through me.’
"As I travel around I tell people the answer is Jesus Christ, that Jesus walking on the earth is more important than man walking on the moon.”
For two decades, Irwin traveled the world and presented small flags he carried from the moon to the leaders of various countries. “These flags were so powerful,” says Bill Dodder, a close friend to Irwin. “He took flags to each country as a means to witness for Jesus Christ."
Dodder traveled with Irwin on several expeditions to Mt. Ararat in search of Noah’s Ark. "We ran the Great Wall of China together,” Dodder recalls.
Irwin continued to suffer heart problems after he left the space program. On the 20th anniversary of the Apollo 15 mission, he spoke in Aspen, Colorado. The next day he took a long bicycle ride to the Maroon Bells near Aspen. After the ride, he collapsed due to a massive heart attack and went to live forever with the God he loved – the same one he encountered on the surface of the moon.
It is ironic, perhaps, that his heavenly homecoming was within hours of the 20th anniversary of his earthly homecoming from the moon.
Dodder was with Irwin on the day he passed away. "The day before he died he said, 'All I want to do is be faithful.'"...

So the Summer Constellations are a picture of the more pleasant aspects of the Gospel. Just as summer is the more pleasant season for much of the world, so too, the “discipleship” portion of the Gospel is the more pleasant aspect of the Christian life; Bible-study, fellowship, sitting at Jesus feet and learning of His ways. As it turned out, Albuquerque, New Mexico was in the direct path for observation of a total eclipse. We weren’t disappointed. Literally thousands flocked the mountains, museums, and mesas to see the amazing natural event.
Throughout history an eclipse has been an event of astronomical fascination—and even fear. At times the Ancients interpreted eclipses as omens and signs.
Even the Bible gives record of events that describe eclipse-type occurrences, connecting it to looming danger or judgment (Amos 8:9).
Many scholars even connect the crucifixion of Jesus to an eclipse-type event.

According to one online site, scientists, Colin Humphreys and W.G Waddington of Oxford University, “reconstructed the Jewish calendar in the first century AD and arrived at the conclusion that Friday April 3 33AD was the date of the Crucifixion. Humphreys and Waddington went further and also reconstructed the scenario for a lunar eclipse on that day.”
In their article, “Dating the Crucifixion,” (Nature 306, December 22/29, 1983, pp. 743-46), they conclude, “This eclipse was visible from Jerusalem at moonrise. .... The start of the eclipse was invisible from Jerusalem, being below the horizon. The eclipse began at 3:40pm and reached a maximum at 5:15pm, with 60% of the moon eclipsed. This was also below the horizon from Jerusalem. The moon rose above the horizon, and was first visible from Jerusalem at about 6:20pm (the start of the Jewish Sabbath and also the start of Passover day in A.D. 33) with about 20% of its disc in the umbra of the earth's shadow and the remainder in the penumbra. The eclipse finished some thirty minutes later at 6:50pm.”
Fascinating. True, a very “naturalistic” perspective of the event, but still intriguing in that it does correspond to the traditional timeframe attributed to Christ’s death and resurrection.

For my part, I used the Eclipse of 2012 as an opportunity to reflect on Christ’s death and resurrection and thank God for His marvelous creation.
After trying to get in to the Albuquerque Balloon Museum Park with my family (where the line was over ½ mile long—and a two hour entrance wait), we decided to separate: my kids heading to the Bear Canyon in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains, and my wife, Melanie, and I heading towards Petropglyps National Monument (ancient art carved on volcanic rock) on Albuquerque’s West Mesa.
For fun, I brought along a Native American flute made by Marvin Toya; Melanie brought her camera. Together, we walked up the hill toward Boca Negra Canyon.
As the eclipse began around 6:28, I started to play the flute, using it as means of prayer. I created notes mimicking the syllable nuances of the Lord’s Prayer.
Folks next to us were using the opportunity as a photographic session, taking pictures in differing clothes. They were kind enough to give us protective sheets of tint so we could view the whole eclipse without burning a hole in our retina.
All around the Mesa cars stopped to view the marvelous experience. People made observation apparatus out of cardboard and tubes; other folks had telescopes and fancy pinhole cameras.
Overall, the encounter was grand affair, bringing people together for a God-given light show. So cool, I thought.

Earlier in the day, I attended a lecture by prominent New Mexico art historian, Dr. Joseph Traugott. Traugott spoke on New Mexico Art Through Time, the title of his newest book and exhibition at the New Mexico Museum of Art and History.
As Traugott made connections between art and nature, I couldn’t help but reflect—later in the day during the Eclipse of 2012—that this incident was a masterwork of divine origin: God’s artwork displayed through nature for the world to sit in awe.

Why would Neil lie about the origin of the famous quotation?

Right off the starting line, I don't buy it.
For one thing, I can't find a single authentic story of Horus being crucified. I find quite a few references which lead to other sources which lead to still more claims which eventually lead back to the original reference, but I'm not finding anything about it at all in Egyptian mythology. Could be I'm overlooking it, so if anybody can point it out to me, that'd be good.

"Horizon" (besides referencing where the sun sets as well as rises and indeed, all points of the skyline) is derived from Greek οÏίζων (orizon), "to limit", and "sunset" has its origin in Old English "sunne" and "settan", and it means to put the sun down. It has nothing to do with Set, the Egyptian god. "Hours" is the plural of "hour", which came from Greek "hora". "Hours" is an anagram of "Horus", but so what? Just because a word in another language sounds/looks like a word in English doesn't mean they have origins in common.
I haven't checked out the rest of it, but that was enough to put me off. There's enough well-researched information about derivative mythologies without making stuff up.

I've read some things about Horus, and never come across any of the things he says. Horus is the son of Isis and Osiris.

I too believe it is largely made up (and I caught its error on saying Muhammad was included among those "born of a virgin" also - that one was incredibly obvious). Unless you can provide me with a shred of evidence to corroborate that enourmous and stretched thesis, it falls absolutely flat, regardless of the "smooth words" and "tantalizing music" and appeal to the "seduction of 'secret knowledge'".
